Amazon.com Based on the perennial nonfiction bestseller by H.G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights looks at high school football in the harsh light of reality, finding heart and hardness while stirring our emotions. Actor-director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things, The Rundown) is Bissinger's cousin; he knows the material well, and understands how an obsession with winning turns high school kids into somber, over-pressured gladiators--expendable soldiers in a community war against shame and obscurity. The fact-based story focuses on the 1988 football season of Odessa-Permian high school in West Texas, and as a fast-paced sports movie, Berg delivers the goods with a rousing, frenetically styled crowd-pleaser. But there's darkness in this tale of weary underdogs, including an abusive father (well-played by country music star Tim McGraw), threatening townsfolk, an injured star running back (Derek Luke), a tormented quarterback (Lucas Black), and the melancholy coach (Billy Bob Thornton) who takes his team to the finals. Berg's film could use less flashy cutting and more drama to support its gridiron intensity, but Friday Night Lights offers a refreshing alternative to the conventional sports movie, and makes a perfect triple-feature with the equally exciting documentaries Go Tigers! and The Last Game. --Jeff Shannon

Greatest football movie ever August 19, 2010 Larry (New Jersey) I have to say that I loved this movie. I'm also a huge football fan, but this movie is so much more then just football. Its about a small window in your life called high school. Its about playing the game you love with guys you grew up with. This is big time high school football in Texas. Even if you don't like football, see this movie, if just for the fact the last 15 minutes of this movie will make you stand up and cheer.
Being a graduate of a Texas high school... August 7, 2010 D. Navarro (the U.S.) ...this film brought back memories of my high school experience and reminded me once again that God ranks a sad second to Football in Texas. The film is based on a season in the life of the Odessa Permian Panthers, a powerhouse team that has appeared with frequency in the Texas State Championship over the last 50 years. A little bit of research revealed that the film is not historically accurate, but that is not the point of the film. This film is about the about the pressure to win put on the high school players by the citizens of Odessa, including friends and family.
The most visible role is played by Thornton, who plays the recently arrived head coach, Gary Gaines, but the other actors play their parts well, too. For me, the film accurately portrays life in Texas high schools with a mixture of Anglo (read "White"), Black, and Hispanics, all living side-by-side, taking a boy's game with the seriousness of adults. Some of it was over the top, but hey, it's a movie. The memories it evoked had special significance for me and I believe many people will identify in some way with the coming-of-age story.
Great movie! July 13, 2010 Jogging Jo (San Francisco Bay Area, CA) I love the Friday Night Lights tv show, and had always wanted to see the movie. It was different, but also excellent. :)
Terrible quality, unable to keep April 24, 2010 P. Glumac (PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Previous reviews made this company seem reputable, but when I got my dvd it was scratched, the audio and video were so terrible I couldn't keep it and the writing on the package was half in Spanish.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SELLER
