Amazon.com Essential Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

Top Gun July 25, 2010 Mark J. House (USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Top Gun is one of my favorite movies ever made. Some of the best jetfights ever caught on film whether real or fake. This is "Firefox" and "Airwolf", FOR REAL! This is as accurate as it gets with dogfights in Strike Eagles and Migs. One of the best Tom Cruise movies ever made. This will make you want to join the Air Force! Highest recommendation possible!
Top Gun Blu Ray edition........WHOOOOSH April 18, 2010 Jason Wong (Vancouver, BC, Canada) Well, the dialogue is down right corny and the actual "in cockpit" footage isn't all that great given the fact that this is supposed to be about pilots and their machines, the fact of the matter is, if you loved Top Gun when it first took flight back in the 80's it's all the more reason to see this in HiDef. The sound track in any set up outside of plain stereo is great and the sounds of the jet engines swooshing by you from front to back and left to right and so on is just booming. I could do without the sausage fest of the volleyball scene but that was the hook for the female crowd. I could do with more flight scenes and fight footage but I didn't write the script. The videos of the songs are a nice inclusion, too.
great addition to any collection April 13, 2010 Love Firefly (Colorado) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Get this for the audio alone April 11, 2010 crow11ad (Texas) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Like many of us we have blu ray or soon will be. If you have a ps3 or a blu ray and needing to add to our library. If you have surround sound, this is a must. It's one of those movies that on blu ray the pq is great, but the sound is this film. Sit back and enjoy. If you live in an apt, you might want to get some headphones...if you live in a house....when you hear the opening theme you will know blu ray.
Blu-Ray quality is great, extras are even better. April 6, 2010 New Jersey 1 (US) The blu-ray has the best extras I've ever seen with a movie. The extras cover each part of the movie making process in great detail and the director confirms that Top Gun had an intentional homo-erotic overtone. This is a mandatory purchase for any blu-ray collection. It helps that Top Gun is a great movie with a great soundtrack.
