The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem like a natural fit. The premise, taken from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) can see into the future--but only about two minutes at the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to make some money at the gambling tables, so long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he hasn't been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to use him to track down terrorists. But all Johnson cares about is a beautiful young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see in his future--much further in his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that point to a much, much better movie than it turned out to be. A sequence in which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all the different permutations of how he might approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to turn a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part of the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to an action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a solid if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a better future than anyone might have predicted. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie   February 10, 2010

This is an excellent movie, and would suggest it to anyone that enjoys good movies.

1 out of 5 stars Interesting for a while, then it turns into a boring action film   February 6, 2010
Filmfan (Denmark)
About 2/3 of the way through this, I thought it was interesting. Then it started to look like
many other action films you have seen. I agree with the negative reviews. Cage and Moore are
good actors. I think it's one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. Luckily, it was on TV.
Now erased. (P.S.: People who write hateful comments should learn to spell.)

4 out of 5 stars Silly but entertaining shenanigans   January 2, 2010
Bradley F. Smith (Miami Beach, FL)
Of course, you'll have to suspend all common sense to get through this digital effects sci-fi 'thriller,' But you'll be very entertained, even if the plot has holes like the Grand Canyon. Why do these terrorists want to nuke LA? We are not told. I guess they planned to commit suicide when the bomb goes off. Anyway, Nick Cage plays a Vegas magician with "precognition," i.e., he sees the future, but only 2 minutes ahead and only if it involves himself. Just for ha-has, they make him fall for luscious Jessica Biel, because who wants to look at balding, jowly Nick Cage for 90 minutes? He is way, way too old for Jessica, but no matter. The avalanche and the nuclear explosion look very digital, as do the many scenes of Nick melting and morphing and zigzagging backward and forward in time. Smartly, this is very quick at 90 minutes, and you won't be bored.

3 out of 5 stars Needed Something More   December 19, 2009
Michael Griswold (Rockford, USA)
Next has an intriguing premise of a man who can see two minutes into the future and the FBI agents seeking out his abilities to foil a terrorist plot to blow up a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, but as other reviewers have pointed out, there are a few plot holes that would've made this a better movie. Who are the terrorists, why are they blowing a nuclear bomb up in LA ? Without this information, all we have is Nicolas Cage and Julliane Moore running around chasing terrorists because these are bad people.

As a big Jessica Biel fan, I have to ask what exactly she was doing in this film other than nearly being blown up by terrorists and having a quickie romance with Nicholas Cage...within the course of a couple of days. It felt like she was just kind of the generic good looking woman that could've been played by any number of actresses. Julliane Moore really brings it though as the hard nosed FBI agent desperate to stop terrorists from wiping out most of LA.

That being said, Next has a lot of action packed into 96 minutes, so if your a fan of fast paced action and can make it beyond the delayed setup, than this movie may be just for you. I'm not sure if I would drop sixteen bucks on this, maybe find it in a $10 dollar bin at Walmart or something.

5 out of 5 stars So Sue Me, I Love This Movie.   December 19, 2009
YJM (Somewhere In The South)
Okay, by all accounts I'm supposed to hate this movie. It was critically panned and even the review on the FX movie channel I'm rewatching it on right now gives it one star. Usually I am in full agreement with the professional reviews, but not this time. This is one of the movies that is pure escape for me. I don't analyze every little detail when I watch this movie and I don't find myself being super critical the way I am with other movies. Can't really explain why, but it might have to do with the beautiful theme music, the beautiful settings of the movie, or the incredibly beautiful Jessica Biel. Man this woman takes my breath away and she especially looks lovely in this movie. Maybe I'm soft on this movie because it's about a guy creatively figuring out how to get the woman of his dreams, and I had a similar challenge meeting my current girlfriend. Unfortunately I did not have the main character's ability to see into the future to increase my odds, had to do it the old fashioned way.

There are some interesting twists and turns, and I have to admit I did not see the end coming. I thought it was a very creative use of his ability. The acting is solid, Nicolas Cage is his normal self, and you either like him or you don't, I like him. As beautiful as Jessica Biel is I think she's a fine actress. Julianne Moore is always great in everything I see her in and the rest of the cast is fine as well. I really appreciate the fact the movie never becomes some sappy love story, it never becomes cliched.

So if you're a super critical reviewer maybe you'll see all the plot holes, poor acting, contrived circumstances, and bad script writing, but as I said, none of that stuff entered into my mind. This is not an oscar worthy movie, but it is a super fun escape for a few hours, and honestly isn't that the point of movies in the first place, escapism?
